About ICSI

Job Opportunity: Windows Systems Administrator

The Organization

The International Computer Science Institute is a world-renowned center for research in computer science. It combines the flexibility of an independent non-profit organization, the vibrancy of an institute focused on international collaboration and the access to technology and innovation that only a strong affiliation with UC Berkeley can provide. Check out ICSI's project page for details of some of the current research, including open source router software, algorithms for genetic sequencing, future Internet architectures and language understanding.

The Job

ICSI is looking for a full-time system administrator to help maintain our state-of-the-art computer system. The position is initially a junior level role with a focus on our Windows desktops and servers. However, we are looking for someone who intends to develop their skills to the point they can take full responsibility for designing, running and securing significant parts of our system. Exposure to Unix clusters, chunky networking hardware, serious storage infrastructure and numerous very smart people is inevitable. The starting salary is likely to be in the range $50K-$60K but the employment benefits are so good that you should be comparing with industry jobs that pay 5%-15% more (even if you ignore the superior working environment!).

The Applicant

We are looking for someone who loves working with computers. An in-depth knowledge of Windows is a necessity (e.g. registry-level changes, network debugging, security configuration), although that needn't necessarily come from a formal sysadmin background. Some knowledge of computer hardware (do you know your SATA from your IDE from your SCSI?) is also essential and the successful candidate is probably comfortable with programming/scripting to solve non-trivial problems. Unix/Linux and MacOS knowledge will definitely give you an edge. Energy, flexibility and good inter-personal skills are key attributes, as are excellent problem solving skills and the ability to learn rapidly on the job. You'll need to be good at time management and have the ability to work without supervision. You should possess communication skills that allow you to convince world-famous academics that, when it comes to running Windows machines, they should listen to you. If you were the sort that dismantled your parents old video recorders just to see how they worked, were the student who put CGI scripts on your school's website when everyone else was still getting excited about icons, and the type that can convince your boss that your idea is better than her bosses idea then you're just the sort of person we're looking for.

The Location

ICSI is located in downtown Berkeley, right near the BART station, the library, the University, the park, a whole bunch of theaters and more good, cheap restaurants than you can count. Sorry, there are no convenient half-vacant strip malls, low rise industrial parks, Walmarts or Dennys.

The Process

If you are interested in the position, please E-mail a resume (in text, HTML, or PDF format) and cover letter to: sysadjobICSI.berkeley.EDU In the cover letter, please include a paragraph or two describing a project or problem resolution, either at work or home, that most demonstrates your suitability for this job.
