Eric Horvitz

Eric Horvitz is a distinguished scientist and deputy managing director at Microsoft Research. His interests span theoretical and practical challenges in developing computing systems that perceive, learn, and reason, with a focus on inference and decision-making under uncertainty and limited resources. His contributions include advances in machine learning and inference, information retrieval, human-computer interaction, medical informatics, and e-commerce. He has been elected a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as president of AAAI and is the incoming chair of the AAAS Section on Information, Computing, and Communication. Other activities include service on the National Science Foundation CISE Advisory Committee, the council of the Computing Community Consortium, the DARPA ISAT Study Group, the Naval Research Advisory Committee, and multiple journal editorial boards. He has published widely and holds more than 200 patents.
