FrameNet Project Featured in the International Journal of Lexicography

ICSI's FrameNet project was featured in the September 2003 issue of the International Journal of Lexicography (Volume 16, Number 3). The publication, focused entirely on FrameNet, features several articles by current and former ICSI researchers.

Speech Group Receives Subcontract from UC Berkeley

ICSI's Speech Group receives subcontract for work on UC Berkeley's NSF project entitled "Information and Communication Technology for Billions" (ICT4B). The goal of this project is to provide access to computer technology in third world countries where it is not currently available, through the development of inexpensive hardware as well as speech recognition technology that can adapt to many different languages. Chuck Wooters of ICSI's Speech Group will lead research to develop a speech recognition toolkit that will be used on the computers being developed for this project.

Michael Ellis Joins SysAdmin Staff

Michael Ellis has joined the ICSI SysAdmin Staff as its new Manager. David Johnson will be moving to a new role leading infrastructure projects.

Nikki Mirghafori, John Moody, and Mark Allman Join ICSI Research Staff

ICSI has several new permanent staff researchers. Nikki Mirghafori, a former Ph.D. student at ICSI, has returned to work with the Speech Group. John Moody is working with the Algorithms Group. Finally, Mark Allman is working with the ICSI Center for Internet Research (ICIR). We look forward to the contributions all three of our new researchers will bring to ICSI's research program.

Mark Handley Appointed Chair at University College London

Mark Handley been appointed to a Chair as a Professor of Networked Systems at University College London. He will continue working with the XORP project much in the spirit of our other strong European collaborations, with the status of ICSI External Fellow.

ICSI Appoints Four New Faculty Associates

ICSI has appointed four new Faculty Associates, in recognition of their close collaboration with ICSI staff on one or more research activities. They are: Professor Steve Weber of the Political Science Department, UCB (working with BCIS); and Professors Joe Hellerstein, Christos Papadimitriou, and Ion Stoica of the Computer Science Department, UCB (working with ICIR).

Birth of Howard Ming Zhu

May 16, 2003
On May 16, 2003, Howard Ming Zhu was born, son of proud ICSI parent Qifeng Zhu and Xuemei Feng. Howard was nine pounds eleven ounces at birth and 22 inches long. Howard's Chinese name is Zhu, Minghao and is a very happy (and big) baby. His father is sure that Howard will be bigger than Dad.

ICSI Building Changes Ownership

The building that houses ICSI, 1947 Center Street, has changed hands on April 1. Formerly owned by a commercial property company, it is now owned and operated by the City of Berkeley. ICSI looks forward to a productive partnership.

German and Spanish Calls Completed

The 2003 German and Spanish calls have been completed, and the new visitors have been chosen and scheduled. The Finnish and Swiss processes are active year-round, and visitors continue to arrive.

ICSI Hosts DARPA EARS Meeting

The DARPA EARS mid-year meeting was hosted by ICSI January 21-23. This program provides the primary DARPA support for speech recognition research.
