ICSI Hosts TRANSCOOP Workshop

March 22, 2004
On March 22-26, 2004, ICSI hosted a collaborative FrameNet workshop on multilingual semantic analysis. In attendance were members of ICSI's FrameNet staff and their German colleagues Manfred Pinkal, Katrin Erk, Anette Frank, Andrea Kowalski, Sebastien Pado and Aljoscha Burchardt from the University of Saarbruecken as well as ICSI alum Hans Boas, who is currently at the University of Texas at Austin. The German visitors are associated with a semantic parsing project called SALSA, directed by Professor Pinkal. Midway through the conference, four researchers from Xerox PARC, Danny Bobrow, Ron Kaplan, Cleo Conaravdi and Richard Crouch, joined the workshop.

This was the first of three workshops sponsored by the TRANSCOOP organization, part of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which supports collaborative research efforts between Germany and North America. SALSA and FrameNet will be co-sponsoring a workshop at the Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC) in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 30, which will involve colleagues from Spain, Japan, Germany, England, the United States, and the Czech Republic, all engaged in semi-automatic annotation of language corpora and lexicon-building efforts based on such annotations. In connection with the LREC meetings the first steps will be taken to form an international cross-linguistic consortium for discussing standards for principles and practices of corpus analysis among various FrameNet-like efforts, as well as the intertranslatability of competing notation systems.
