Network Magazine Features XORP Project

March 5, 2004
ICSI's XORP (eXtensible Open Router Platform) project was featured in the March 2004 issue of Network Magazine in an article by Doug Allen. The article claims that XORP "may do for routing what Linux did for OSs." Like Linux, XORP is open source and free to download. Orion Hodson, a XORP researcher at ICSI, points out another strength of XORP, which is the relatively inexpensive cost of the hardware to run XORP — about $1,500 as compared to $22,000 for a commercial router made by Cisco. According to the article, XORP is not yet a threat to router vendors, but it could potentially have a significant effect in the future.

Interview of John Moody

March 1, 2004
John Moody, a senior researcher in the Algorithms Group, was interviewed live by Erin Burnett on the Bloomberg Financial News channel on Monday, March 1, 2004. Moody's academic research centers on machine learning algorithms and computational finance. He is also the founder of J E Moody & Company, LLC, an alternative investment management firm.

In the television interview, he discussed how his firm's approach to quantitative asset management differs from traditional approaches due to his academic background. Moody uses machine learning and statistics to more accurately predict market trends and avoid "data snooping".

New York Times Quotes ICSI Researcher

February 8, 2004
ICSI Postdoc Nick Weaver, of the Networking Group, was quoted in the New York Times on February 8, 2004 in an article about internet viruses and worms. Weaver's research at ICSI focuses specifically on worms, which, unlike viruses, do not require user action in order to replicate. In the New York Times article, Weaver discusses the speed at which worms can travel and the potential damage that this can cause.
