The process of human blood clotting involves a com-plex interaction of continuous-time/continuous-stateprocesses and discrete-event/discrete-state phenom-ena, where the former comprise the various chemicalrate equations and the latter comprise both threshold-limited behaviors and binary states (presence/absenceof a chemical). Whereas previous blood-clotting mod-els used only continuous dynamics and perforce ad-dressed only portions of the coagulation cascade, wecapture both continuous and discrete aspects by mod-eling it as a hybrid dynamical system. The model wasimplemented as a hybrid Petri net, a graphical model-ing language that extends ordinary Petri nets to covercontinuous quantities and continuous-timeflows. The primary focus is simulation; specifically, we are inter-ested in (1) fidelity of simulation to the actual clottingprocess in terms of clotting factor concentrations andelapsed time; (2) simulating known clotting patholo-gies; and (3) providing fine-grained predictions whichmay be used to refine clinical understanding of bloodclotting. Finally, we examine the sensitivity of a criti-cal purely-continuous subsystem to rate-constant per-turbation.
