ICSI was incorporated in 1986 as a partnership between UC Berkeley and the German Federal Laboratory for Computer Science (GMD) in order to strengthen collaborative ties between the computer science communities of the U.S. and Germany. Since then, the Institute has continued to enjoy vibrant collaborations with sponsoring partners from industry, government, and other public and private organizations from the U.S. and across the globe.

The Institute provides access to the world's top scientific research pursued both at the Institute and in the Bay Area. A short walk from UC Berkeley and a short drive from San Jose and the Silicon Valley, the Institute is at the hub of technological research and innovation.
