BFOIT, the Berkeley Foundation for Opportunities in
Information Technology, part of BCIS, has been awarded a renewable grant
from the Elizabeth and Stephen Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, which will allow
the program to continue. BFOIT had a very successful program during the
summer of 2003, expanding to a year round program with 25 high school
students, and has plans to double the size to include 50 students next
summer, and will include middle school students as well. BFOIT also has
plans to start a program at a second location in San Jose.
Director Orpheus Crutchfield commented, "We may
have turned the corner with this award - besides providing stability, we
will be able to help many more deserving students now! We would like to
extend our great thanks to ICSI Chairman Elwyn Berlekamp for
facilitating the contact with the Elizabeth and Stephen Bechtel, Jr.
Foundation."
