Professor Steve Weber, one of ICSI's Faculty
Associates, has recently had a book published by Harvard University
Press called The Success of Open Source. Excerpts from
the book are available on the Global Business Network website. There is
also an article about the book in the April 19, 2004 edition of the
San Francisco Chronicle.
Weber's book discusses the growing popularity of
open-source software, such as the Linux operating system, and says that
"Open source is not just for hackers. It's a new way of organizing
people to create complex products in a knowledge-based
economy."
Researchers at ICSI are directly involved in the
development of open-source software. One project, which is part of a UC
Berkeley project, Information and Communication Technology for Billions
(ICT4B), aims to bring technology to billions of people all over the
world. Another ICSI open-source project is the XORP (eXtensible Open
Router Platform) project which has recently attracted significant media
attention.
