Algorithms

HAP: Haplotype Resolution using Imperfect Phylogeny: The online HAP program is used to separate sequences of genetic data into haplotypes, which are used in research on the genetic components of complex diseases. The HAP Website >>

Protein Interaction Networks and Transcriptional Regulation: This research focuses on the interactions between genes and proteins that regulate the transcription of genes and the responses of cells to external signals. Dissection of regulatory networks that control gene transcription is one of the greates challenges of functional genomics.

AI

FrameNet: FrameNet is building a semantically-rich machine-readable lexicon of English and a corresponding set of annotated texts. FrameNet Website >>

AQUAINT: The ARDA funded AQUAINT program focuses on question answering systems. ARDA AQUAINT Website >>

Networking

XORP: eXtensible Open Router Project: XORP is an open source software router platform being developed at ICSI. XORP Website >>

CCIED: Collaborative Center for Internet Epidemiology and Defenses: This NSF funded center is a joint effort with researchers at UCSD focused on improving defense mechanisms against Internet epidemics.

Speech

Global Autonomous Language Exploitation (GALE): The goal of the DARPA GALE program is to develop and apply technologies to absorb, analyze and interpret huge volumes of speech and text in multiple languages. Automatic processing "engines" will convert and distill the data, delivering pertinent, consolidated information in easy-to-understand forms to military personnel and monolingual English-speaking analysts in response to direct or implicit requests.

Speech Processing for Meetings: ICSI researchers seek to develop algorithms and systems for the recognition of speech from meetings, as well as methods for information retrieval and other applications that such recognition would make possible.

Other Areas of Research

BFOIT: The Berkeley Foundation for Opportunities in Information Technology: BFOIT supports historically underrepresented ethnic minorities and women in their desire to become leaders in the fields of computer science, engineering and information technology. BFOIT Website >>

COPE: Community of Practice Environment: COPE is developing a system to support general users in utilizing the Internet for information sharing and collaboration without aid from technical support personnel.

Robust Video Compression based on Distributed Source Coding techiniques. This project studies enhancing a baseline MPEG system through the use of a distributed source coded auxiliary channel.
