Abstract:

I will begin my talk presenting the work that constituted my PhD thesis in which I assessed the distortion caused by wireless and IP transmission channels over ASR systems. Then I will discuss the bit-stream based system results proposed as a robust solution to the mentioned distortion.

As a continuation of that work I will introduce some (successful and unsuccessful) applications of the Support Vector Machines on speech I have tried. I will also outline the basis of these algorithms with the purpose of motivating a discussion on their applicability to speech related problems.

Speaker Bio:

I obtained my Telecommunications Engineering degree from the University of Navarre (Pamplona, Spain) in 1997, having done my Final Year Project (equivalent to an MSc thesis) in the University of Westminster (London, UK). Then, I moved to Madrid and received my PhD from the University Carlos III in 2002. Since then I have been working there as an Assistant Professor.
