Wednesday, March 7, 2001
Soda 306, UCB
6-8 pm

Abstract:

A discussion with Pekka Himanen, Manuel Castells and Jerry Feldman, moderated by Moira Gunn.

Sponsored by the UCB Computer Science and Sociology departments and The Finnish/Berkeley Program on the Information Society.

The hacker ethic is one of the most important ethical and political challenges in our time. Hackers* promote passionate and freely rhythmed work; the belief that individuals can create great things by joining forces through the open-source model; and the defense of our ethical ideals, such as privacy and free expression, in our new, increasingly technologized network society. The Thursday discussion is based on Pekka Himanen's The Hacker Ethic and the Spirit of the Information Age with writings by Linus Torvalds and Manuel Castells (Random House, 2001). For more, see www.hackerethic.org.

*In the original meaning of the word: not the computer criminals but people who program enthusiastically and share their creations freely with others.

This talk will be held in the Main Lecture Hall at ICSI.
