Abstract:

While the demand on quality of digital images and videos increases, there are new standards and techniques in still image as well as in video data compression which are going to meet this demand. For still images the new compression standard JPEG 2000, based on wavelet transforms, has been released. In video coding ISO and ITU-T have created a joint standardisation committee (JVT) which will release a new video compression standard, superior to all current techniques (in a rate-vs-distortion sense). This is standard will be based on techniques proposed in ongoing H26L projects within the ITU-T standardisation group. There is also a new video compression algorithm based on wavelet techniques, different from H26L which partly topples the codecs known in the literature so far. This talk gives a general introduction into image and video compression techniques and reports on the new standards and techniques. It will be concluded with some demos showing the recent improvements. We will also show a real-time IP video conference system based on earlier versions of these wavelet codecs.

This talk will be held in the Main Lecture Hall at ICSI.
