Lecture 20 - November 13, 1997

Neural development is another vast and fascinating field. The Ballard book has some relevant material and also talks about genetic algorithms, inspired by genetic development. Chapter 5 of the "Rethinking Innateness" text book (not workbook) on reserve has a good general introduction to the area, with their standard axe-grinding. The Arbib handbook has several good articles.

More technically, the standard text book appears to be by Marcus Jacobson, with various editions. There is an excellent special issue of Current Opinion in Neurobiology 1992, v.2 on the subject and some articles in Science, Volume 274; the November 15, 1996 issue. The September 1992 issue of Scientific American is also good.

The excellent review article mentioned in class is by A. Das " Plasticity in adult sensory cortex: a review" Network, v.8 (1997) p. R33-R76

I would love to find some on-line video of neural development over time, but haven't succeeded yet.
