Short bio:

I am an Assistant Research Professor at IMDEA Networks since October 2016 where I lead the Internet Analytics Group (IAG). I also hold a part-time appointment as Research Scientist at the Networking and Security team at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at Berkeley (USA) and I am one of the co-founders of AppCensus.

I obtained his Ph.D in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof.Jon Crowcroft. Before joining the PhD program, I gained industry experience at Vodafone R&D and Telefonica Research. I have been the PI of several international projects (EU H2020, USA NSF).

My research falls in the area of empirical network measurements, with a focus on network performance, protocol analysis, and also privacy and security aspects of mobile apps. My most recent research efforts have explored the intersection of regulatory compliance (e.g., U.S.A. COPPA Rule and EU's GDPR), software transparency, consumer protection, and privacy using empirical methods.

My research output has received best paper awards at the 2020 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (S&P), USENIX Security’19, ACM IMC’18, ACM HotMiddlebox’15, and ACM CoNEXT’14. Specifically, my research work at the intersection of mobile security and privacy law has influenced policy changes and security improvements in the Android platform. The societal value of my research contributions has been recognized by European Data Protection Agencies and key industry players. Among others, I received distinctions such as the AEPD Emilio Aced Award (in 2019 and 2020), the CNIL-INRIA Privacy Protection Award (2019), the Caspar Bowden PETS Award (2020), and the IETF/IRTF Applied Networking Research Award. Additionally, I am the recipient of industry grants such as the 2018 Google Faculty Research Awards, DataTransparencyLab Grant in 2016, and Qualcomm’s Innovation Fellowship in 2012. International media outlets like The Washington Post, The Markup, The New York Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, Wired, ArsTechnica, NPR, and El Pais have covered my research findings.
