CS 294-4: Connectionist and Neural Computation

Lecture 21 - November 04, 1997

Today we discussed some proposals for representing structured information and role-entity bindings using distributed representations. Refer to Plate, T. A. (1994) Distributed Representations and Nested Compositional Structure Ph.D. Thesis, Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto.

We also discussed the use of "signatures" for expressing dynamic bindings. Refer to Lange, T.E., \& Dyer, M.G. (1989) High-level Inferencing in a Connectionist Network. Connection Science, 1 (2), 181-217 for a discussion of the signature approach and Shastri, L. (1996) Temporal Synchrony, Dynamic Bindings, and SHRUTI: a representational but non-classical model of reflexive reasoning, Behavioral and Brain Sciences 19 (2) 331-337 for a discussion of the relative merits of the two approaches.
