Experiments have been performed which explore the perception of formant
transitions from two concurrent syllables. The approximants /w/ and /j/
were combined with the vowels /i/ and/a/ to form syllables. These were
played simultaneously to listeners for identification. It was found that
the consonants could be identified part of the time if the syllables differed
in pitch and contained different vowels. Further experiments have explored
the effects of pitch difference and formant transition delay.
