Research Areas
ICSI's research environment is characterized by open communication among its research areas. Research directions are determined largely by the interests of principal investigators and are frequently interdisciplinary.
The Institute comprises eight research areas:
- 2i2c develops, deploys, customizes, and manages open source tools for interactive computing in research and education and is led by Dr. Christopher Holdgraf;
- Artificial Intelligence focuses on AI's applications to natural language understanding and is led by Professor Jerome Feldman;
- Audio and Multimedia develops computational algorithms, systems, and methods to handle content composed of multiple types of data and is led by Dr. Gerald Friedland;
- Big Data examines algorithmic and statistical aspects of large-scale data analysis and is led by Professor Michael Mahoney;
- Networking and Security studies Internet architecture, related theoretical questions, and network security and is led by Professor Vern Paxson;
- Research Initiatives expands ICSI's traditional research horizons, serves as an incubator of research outside ICSI's principal research areas, and provides additional opportunities for cutting-edge and experimental work on topics including genomics, brain networks, and computer architecture and is led by Professor Scott Shenker;
- Usable Security and Privacy examines how human factors impact privacy and security and is led by Dr. Serge Egelman
- Vision pursues research on computer vision and is led by Dr. Stella Yu.
