Abstract

In recent years there has been a major effort to integrate fiber optic media into existing communication systems. In this survey, we outline the physics behind fiber optic media and optical interfaces. Different types of optical interfaces and optical media are considered and the advantages and disadvantages of each are listed. We then discuss topologies and protocols suitable for optical fibers in communication. We also take a detailed look into the new Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) Standard for fiber-optic token rings. Finally, we list off-the-shelf fiber networks available as of September 1988.
