Abstract

Source-controlled routing has been proposed as a way toimprove flexibility of future network architectures, as wellas simplifying the data plane. However, if a packet spec-ifies its path, this precludes fast local re-routing withinthe network. We propose SlickPackets, a novel solutionthat allows packets to slip around failures by specifyingalternate paths in their headers, in the form of compactly-encoded directed acyclic graphs. We show that this canbe accomplished with reasonably small packet headers forreal network topologies, and results in responsiveness tofailures that is competitive with past approaches that re-quire much more state within the network. Our approachthus enables fast failure response while preserving thebenefits of source-controlled routing.
